Illuminating Halifax’s Future: YOA Series Lights the Cogswell District

Transforming the Cogswell District

The City of Halifax is transforming the Cogswell District, one of the largest infrastructure projects in the city’s history. The redevelopment reconnects neighborhoods, builds new public spaces, and redefines the city’s downtown streetscape.

Lighting plays a central role in creating this new urban environment—and Halifax chose the Schréder YOA series to deliver performance, durability, and design consistency. More than 200 Schréder poles and luminaires were installed, each engineered with photometries that provide precise light distribution, uniform illumination, and effective glare control for both pedestrians and drivers.

A Cohesive Lighting Solution

Working with Atlantica as the contractor and WSP as the project’s lighting designer, the city selected YOA luminaires along with Conica poles, Lucea and Lyre brackets. The YOA family offers two sizes, YOA Midi and YOA Maxi, and supports both post-top and lateral mounting.

This flexibility made it possible to light paths, streets, and boulevards with a system that maintains a clean, modern appearance across the district.

All supplied components received treatment for saline environments to ensure corrosion resistance in Halifax’s coastal environment. The result is a system built for long service life and consistent visual quality in all conditions.

Feedback from the City of Halifax

Donna Davis, Project Manager for the City of Halifax, summarized the city’s experience:

“The Schréder YOA light series was selected for the Cogswell District because of its versatility, quality, and aesthetic. We were able to use this single family of lights throughout our project area. This modern design has been added to our standard light sets and will be used in future streetscape projects across the city. Working with France at Schréder and her team was a wonderful experience. They are very knowledgeable about their products, the technical considerations, and installation and maintenance.”
